I'm so sad! Sophia Petrillo was by far the most awesome of the Golden Girls. She died after a long battle with Lewy body dementia. Estelle was actually a year younger than her co-stars Betty White and Bea Arthur, who played her daughter. Look at that hot mama!
Estelle leaves behind two sons, Carl and Barry Gettleman, but she is joining her husband Arthur in heaven. She was married to Arthur from 1946 until his passing in 2004. Estelle was born the daughter of Polish immigrants who worked in the glass business. She started out in Yiddish theatre and even worked as a comedian in the Catskill resorts like they had in Dirty Dancing. She spent many years working on Broadway. She also played Sly Stallone's mom in "Stop or My Mom will Shoot!" which looked pretty funny (but was probably really bad as well).
This is what the other GG's had to say upon hearing about Estelle's passing.
Rue McClanahan told the Associated Press, "Don't feel sad about her passing. She will always be with us in her crowning achievement, Sophia." Bea Arthur said in a statement, "Our mother-daughter relationship was one of the greatest comic duos ever, and I will miss her." Betty White remarked, "The only comfort at this moment is that although Estelle has moved on, Sophia will always be with us."
On Friday, Lifetime will be airing 10 of Sophia's best episodes in her honor. I thought that I would put some of my favorite Sophia moments up to enjoy.

Let's celebrate the greatness of Estelle Getty!
